Stairway to Stardom, the greatest public access talent show of all time, gets a video retrospective courtesy of Video Pirates! Plus Stairway regulars All the King’s Men, composers of the show’s memorable theme song, will reunite for a rare live performance!
From 1979 through the early 1990s, the Manhattan-shot Stairway to Stardom showcased the best and worst of amateur singers, dancers, and uncommon talents. Creator/host Frank Masi, a Philadelphia native with a background in music, put ads in newspapers and scouted local music schools for performers who would pay a small fee for television exposure. The results are legendary and diverse, from the comedy of character actor Don Costello to the performance of the incredibly catchy “Hairdresser” by fan favorite Lucille Cataldo. The show has taken on a whole new life in the past decade thanks to YouTube highlight videos and mainstream press coverage from the likes of NPR and The A.V. Club.
The program will take a look at the show’s development, its performance highs and lows, and the backgrounds of notable performers. All the King’s Men will be on hand to provide their first-hand memories of appearing on the show and will also perform a few of their hits. Crazy!
