1990s Michigan-based public access show 30 Minutes of Madness embraced the grunge/punk counterculture of the era to create a program that showcased the humor and talents of a group of high school outsiders, punks, skaters, and artists.  Kids in the Hall-styled sketch comedy, ’90s-era MTV attitude, and the trash art stylings of John Waters are all evident in the show, which serves as a valuable time capsule of the wild suburban youth of that time.

30minutesstill-smThe documentary 20 Years of Madness follows Jerry White Jr., 30 Minutes of Madness creator, as he returns to his hometown of Rochester, Michigan to make a new episode for the show’s twenty-year anniversary.  As Jerry gets the old gang back together, he is forced to confront years of resentment, rebuild burnt bridges, and balance challenging personalities in the hope of reviving a once thriving creative community.  Featuring archive footage culled from over 300 hours of analog video, the result is a sincere and intimate portrait of an underground community held together by the desire to make each other laugh and the memories of their friendship and creative collaboration.
